Kerala witnessed an unprecedented natural calamity in June, July and August this year. This is perhaps the only single calamity that covered almost all the districts of Kerala. Though all the districts of Kerala had a share of the havoc caused by disaster Wayanad, Calicut, Kannur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur and Ernakulam districts had to receive the major chunk of damage in terms of loss of lives, property and livelihood.

More than 300 small and medium Landslides are reported in Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad, Calicut, and Palakkad districts. All the 44 rivers and 39 dams overflowed and the flood water entered into the dwelling areas much beyond our expectations. The entire Kuttanad region lying in Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta Districts submerged in the flood water up to 8 to 15 feet.

Damages at a glance


  • 474 people died since 29th May 2018 of which 322 people died between 16- 24 August 2018
  • Houses damaged as per primary report- 75,000
  • Poultry loss - 200,000
  • Crop Loss- 45,000 hectares of farm land
  • Some locations are mapped by the experts as dangerous to live in due to the changed happened on the earth because of the heavy rain fall.
  • PWD Road damages – 16,000 kilometres
  • Local Roads damaged – 82,000 Kilometres
  • Bridges damaged - 134
  • Total Loss is above 20,000 crores as per Govt. report
  • Many towns viz; Palakkad, Thrissur, Angamaly, Aluva, Cochin, Palai, Muvattupuzha, Chengannur, Ranni and part of Changanacherry etc. were under water and the loss of business people are not yet calculated. The actual loss yet to be calculated.

Specifications and Budget for one house

It is proposed to construct small but durable houses for them having two rooms, a kitchen, a verandah and a toilet. The total plinth area calculated for the above is 450 sq.ft., the structural specification of the housing unit would be as given below:

  • Livelihood support for100 beneficiaries ₹ 50000 in Palakkad and Idukki districts people affected in Kerala.
  • Relief material for 100 families ₹ 50000 from Plastic tarpaulins, Clothes-Lungi, T-shirt, sarees, petticoat, blouse, Nighty, Churidars, Sanitary napkin, Glucose, trunk box, Bedspread, blanket, Heavy duty search lights, Torches, buckets, mugs, mosquito net and Cooking utensil, grocery (rice bags, sugar, cereals, salt, edible oils for one month for 100 families)
